Pros & Cons

  • I think the best thing about the company is the open working culture within colleagues. I was a bit scared as I am a chemical engineer but I was about to work in a construction/civil company. But, as soon as I started, I felt welcomed and at ease. The team I started with was just amazing and helped me settle in perfectly. Couldn't have asked for a better start.
  • Extremely supportive and friendly seniors that encourages, guides and mentors graduate to excel in their roles and provides opportunities to gain exposure/ experience in the industry.
  • The opportunities to learn, being given the time and space to travel between sites, to train and learn new things or refresh old skills. Having a team of incredible people that I can turn to for support and ask questions!
  • The atmosphere is super friendly that fosters growth and collaboration. The abundance of amazing learning opportunities to equip me with valuable skills and knowledge, complemented by a well-structured graduate program.
  • I think the best thing is the opportunity to work alongside a wide range of people and disciplines, opening your eyes to so many different skill sets. This gives you the opportunity to constantly learn, particularly as I am not from a construction or engineering background. Everybody in my direct and wider team is open to assisting me as well as having a laugh while still delivering great outcomes for the community. I really enjoy the top-down positive and cohesive environment that the team here provides, in more ways than one. I really enjoy working here!
  • You have to be quite adaptable, given the organisation's requirements are constantly changing you have to switch up what you are doing quite frequently.
  • Work Life Balance.
  • Long Working Hours, and Very Remote Place.
  • Long commute time to different projects.
  • Sometimes I work long hours (I like my job and the work, so I'm okay with it, but others may not be).

Career Prospects
I am on track to getting a promotion from my current position which I am very happy about but I would like to see how my career develops in the following years. Based on the people I work with and their career development, I am hopeful that I can follow on the same path as them. I have found that being a hard worker, being innovative and having a good attitude are great traits for being looked at for promotion possibilities.

Corporate Social Responsibility
There are plenty of social and indigenous procurement initiatives. You are encouraged in your career development to find suppliers that provides CSR positive goods and services. It is a tough industry to mitigate carbon dioxide emissions but the company is pushing towards net zero.

Culture
In office the culture is great, people are incredibly friendly and willing to help you in whatever way they can. Often a new site compound, office or job in general can be intimidating walking into a new environment where you don’t know anyone. This is normal. But introducing yourself to new people is pivotal to building a good workplace culture. In office people work hard, but there is also a big regard for creating a friendly, warm, workplace where everyone works in one room (mainly) meaning cross collaboration, teamwork and conversations occur. Teamwork happens every day, I speak and work closely with Engineers regarding works happening and enviro controls needed for example. Out of office, I have been on numerous grad drinks which have been a great way to get to know people and talk about life and things happening outside of work. I had the SPS (Sewer Pump Station ) project launch which was followed by food and drinks, this was great to socialise with colleagues who are older than me, creating that professional relationship.

Diversity

Diversity
The company is extremely diverse, this can be seen through the many different people and their respective backgrounds. There are people from all over the world, and there cultures are accepted. Women are highly regarded, with many women in senior positions which is great to see. Maternity leave are given to women to be able to raise their child throughout the first few months of their life. From speaking to many women retention is high within FH, with some being part of the company for 5-10+ years. This can be directly correlated to career progression and promotion.

Satisfaction

Satisfaction
Since I started, I have been extremely supported by my team and have been given a manageable workload that allows time for new starters to work through the learning curve. On site, I am always accompanied by site supervisors, contractors (FH), and, in some instances, my team members, who teach the basics required for my role and growth as an engineer.

Management

Management
I am extremely satisfied with my immediate team. Being a newcomer or graduate, I consider all engineers senior to me as my manager (Site engineer, Senior Project Engineer etc.). I was extremely supported by my team and I am constantly being mentored and guided to shape my future career by them. Performance feedback is very detailed and professionally straightforward. Instructions are very clearly communicated to me and within the team. When things are done well, managers take every opportunity to recognise and praise the relevant team members. The managers have created a safe and secure working environment for the team members to share their successes or raise any mistakes without harsh judgement.

There are two main offices, Goodwood St in Richmond and Botanicca which is the corporate office. Botanicca and Goodwood have nice, formal dress codes. For example the dress codes are formal with shirts, chino pants and generally nice clothing acceptable. Also, people work on site in the site compounds, the dress code is PPE. This is made up of high Vis, Steel cap boots, long pants. Goodwood and Botanicca are located within central Melbourne. Site compounds differ and are found all over Melbourne. Facilities are very good, with plenty of desks, monitors, nice kitchens, prayer rooms etc.

The interview process was the most relaxed I undertook in my search for a job. I was made to feel welcome and at ease, as well as being asked questions that I felt comfortable answering, which allowed me to show myself off.

Work Hours
I either work on site, in the office, or from home. When on site, I normally work 7–4:30, which totals to 9 hours a day once you include a lunch break. Working 9 hours a day is not a problem for me; in fact, there aren't often enough hours in the day! But working these hours on a daily basis took time to get used to, but I am now used to it and am able to work effectively throughout the day. When at home or in the Richmond office, I work from 8:30 to 5:00. I am also used to this now. In terms of flexibility, FH is extremely flexible; there have been instances where I have not been able to work my full hours on a particular day, and my manager or advisor is open to me having commitments outside of work.

My company being part of the construction industry is constantly finding ways to improve our green initiative as well as ensuring all employees are educated and aware of the responsibility we hold to reduce our environmental footprint in every way possible.
