Wake up, shower and make breakfast.

In summer I like to hike up Mt Ainslie before work and in winter hit the gym for daily cardio for about an hour every morning.

8.00 AM

Start work, check emails, calendars and daily schedule.

9.00 AM

Follow up with any client matters and send any outstanding emails. Conduct legal research and review of the federal register of legislation for relevant Acts and Regulations and case law. Search the database for previous matters that may have similar legal facts and draft advice.

10.00 AM 

Meeting with my supervisor to catch up and discuss my capacity and current assigned matters and to update on the progress of where matters are at. This time is also good to clarify any issues or questions as to the next steps. Also, to address any administrative issues such as flex or leave arrangements.

10.30 AM 

Coffee catch ups with colleagues and or fellow graduates from Graduate Development Program. There are no shortage of cafés in Canberra! This is a great way to network, ask questions and seek support and ideas for managing your experience with your rotation placements.

11.00 AM 

Meeting with clients to discuss concerns and or answer their questions in relation to their matters. Negotiating timeframes as to when legal advice will be required. Due to Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions these meetings have essentially shifted to an online Virtual Conferencing function usually through Skype or MS Teams.

12.30 PM 

Lunch time – I brought prepared lunches to work. However, there are many options available and on close proximity to Industry House that are very popular and healthy. The Canberra Centre has a food court within close walking distance. Glebe Park is very popular with the 2021 Graduates for meeting up for lunch in the park on nice sunny days!

Employment Programs training – There are a number of mandatory training modules graduates are required to complete. These are very useful in understanding the APS Code and Values as well as standards expected of employees within the department. Also, further training is provided to support and develop your skills throughout the program and assist in shaping your professional development within the department for example cultural awareness, people with a disability and resilience training.

2.30 PM

Online ALL Staff meeting by the executive, the Secretary will provide a comprehensive update as to what the Department has been undertaking and acknowledging achievements by individuals for their hard work and dedication on specific programs and projects DISER has implemented. Also an update on future endeavours and visions for the department.

3.30 PM

Meeting with a senior colleague to discuss their feedback and guidance on a matter they have reviewed for me. This inclusive and collaborative process enables you to identify the positive applications of your work as well as ways to improve and develop professionally.

4.30 PM 

Review tasks schedule and update calendar. Review next days scheduled task list and review reminders set for the following day.

5.00 PM 

Logoff work and say goodbye to the team. Walk home to my apartment.

5.30 PM

Prepare my gym bag and pre-work out. Hit the gym for approximately 2 hours training. Luckily the gym is within walking distance to my apartment.

7.30 PM

Shower, cook dinner and prepare meals for next day.

8.30 PM

Watch Netflix or read a book.

9.30 PM 

Go to sleep.
