Disability Support at National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA)

All staff should be able to bring their whole selves to work. A workplace that respects diversity results in a more productive and creative workplace that represents the entire population we serve.

Diversity networks enable staff from different backgrounds to come together. They create a safe space for staff to share experiences, ideas and connect.

The NIAA has 6 diversity networks, whose main goal is provide support and connection to employees in the network. Your level of involvement is up to you: you can join an email list, take part in network events, or join a network committee and help organise network events.

The Disability Network is a staff group with the purpose of supporting individuals who identify as living with disability and those with carer responsibilities, and influencing NIAA policies and procedures to improve the lived experience of staff with disability and/or carer responsibilities. All NIAA staff are welcome to join the network whether or not they identify as living with disability or as a carer.

This year I have been a part of the Disability network. Through the disability network I have been able to share my experience of being autistic and also assist with putting together stories for our monthly newsletter. In particular, I’ve enjoyed putting together a piece for ADHD awareness month and writing about Matildas player Mackenzie Arnold and her experience of being hard of hearing.
