Tyler Jarvis

6.00 AM

As the saying goes; the (somewhat) early bird gets the worm - as we move closer to summer my day usually begins at 6. To get the morning moving I always make sure to have my clothes and gear laid-out/packed so that I can shower and get out the house as quickly as possible.

6.30 AM

I’m usually on the train by 6:30 at the latest. I spend my 35-minute commute either catching up on a podcast or reading a book/the news - I’m currently reading book four in the ‘Dune’ series.

7.30 AM

The working day begins! After a short walk to the office, I am usually at my desk with breakfast in-hand (or on-plate) by 7:30. I take advantage of the relative early-morning calm and eat some food while I reply to emails and check my schedule for the day ahead.

After breakfast I get my daily checks out the way. I am the technical lead for a geospatial mapping application and an infrastructure monitoring platform within the SCADA environment - so it’s always handy to check that everything stayed healthy overnight.

8.30 AM

By 8:30 most of the team has arrived, and it’s time for coffee! We muster the troops and commence our daily coffee ritual which consists of walking down to our local to retrieve coffee - if you work in IT then coffee is a must! - and then catching up over a few minutes of jigsaw puzzles.

Meeting

8.45 AM

Now that coffee is down the hatch, it’s time to begin the important work! I’ll usually spend the following few hours in meetings or working on incidents as they come through. This morning I have a Security Operations meeting, and a fortnightly check-in with one of our vendors to discuss new development on one of our projects - so I’ll catch up with you after!

12.00 PM

Two words: Lunch. Time. My break tends to vary depending on the day. I generally take lunch downstairs with the other graduates or will go out for some food with my team - today I’m doing neither and am instead catching up with one of my very wise friends from the Planning & Architecture team to discuss a very important topic: which noodle dish rules them all?

12.30 PM

With lunch over it’s time to dive back into the world of SCADA support. I’m currently driving the deployment of a new feature to one of our geospatial applications used by Network Operations. To facilitate this, I’ll spend some time on calls with the security team to get our connections organised. After that it’s headphones-on, terminals up and time to jump onto some servers to deploy and stress-test our updates.

Office

3.30 PM

Home time! I’ll usually fit in some early dinner - I’m experimenting with intermittent fasting- and then pack up my gear and leave the office for the day after tucking in the applications. On the train home I like to start winding-down and will either listen to music or watch some videos on YouTube.

4.30 PM

I’m usually home by 4:30, so it’s time to get unpacked and head out to do some exercise. I usually hit the gym, however with the weather warming up I’ve decided to go with some swimming - so it’s time to hit the pool and get some KMs in.

Pool

7.00 PM

After training I will usually get home and spend 30-60 learning something new. The IT/OT industry is extremely dynamic, and learning new skills and technologies is essential to stay ahead of the pack and keep providing a high standard of service to our customers.

8.00 PM

After doing some studying, I’ll get my food out the freezer for tomorrow and pack my bag ready to go for the morning. Then it’s time to complete the most important task of the day; spending 10 minutes assuring my dog Indi that she’s the only dog in my life - she’s four but still thinks she’s a puppy! I’ll then watch some Netflix or YouTube for an hour or so, then it’s time to shut my eyes and do it all again tomorrow!
