Rhys Cockrell

Having flexible working hours at Western Power is a massive benefit for myself as I’ve always had a preference for starting early.

5:00 AM

Alarm sounds off and its time to get ready for work. Having flexible working hours at Western Power is a massive benefit for myself as I’ve always had a preference for starting early.

5:15 AM

Begin the work commute which consists of a drive and train – one of the downsides to living in the outer hills region of Perth however I prefer the quiet lifestyle. Spotify always gets me through the train rides – Linkin Park and MGK are blasting this morning.

6:20 AM

Arrive at the office after a very brief walk and open my computer to go through some emails and begin to formulate my day. I enjoy being the only one in the office at this time as I can get my thoughts straight before getting stuck into the day.

7:10 AM

Head out for the first coffee of the day with a group of other early risers. Finns Espresso is always our destination of choice and we’ll took about footy (dependant on how we our own team is going). Being the Winter months, sunrise is pretty late but its looking especially good this morning (don’t mind the window reflection).

7:30 AM

Pick up where I left off yesterday afternoon. I’m currently working on a procedural guideline for the preparation of an Economic Regulation Report to the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). Having recently submitted our report for the current period, we are looking to improve the report preparation process for next year which currently requires a high volume of cross-functional input.

9:00 AM

All of my team has arrived so I go out for my second coffee of the day. We talk a bit about our weekends or upcoming plans for the weekends generally.

9:15 AM

I validate key points of my guideline with some of the senior members of my team who have prepared this report a number of times. Key ideas discussed include potential updates to systems, current bottlenecks and future process improvements.

9:45 AM

Continue working on a Process flow diagram accurately mapping the front to end Loss Factor Process for visualisation purposes.

12:00 PM

Time for lunch. Today I go to Le Vietnam with a couple of my mates – the crispy roast pork Banh Mi is off the charts.

12:45 PM

Prep for an upcoming meeting.

1:00 PM

Meeting with Technology & Data Services to present current findings on ideas for process improvements for next years report preparation.

3:00 PM

Discuss immediate team actions post-meeting and finish off with personal admin tasks.

3:30 PM

End of the working day – time to begin the commute home. Its currently school holidays making for a less crowded trip home.

4:30 PM

Arrive home and unwind for half an hour. I usually throw the ball for my Kelpie (Nigel) until he tires himself out (which does not happen often)

5:00 PM

Time to go for a run on the Bridle trail which is only a 2 minute drive from my house. I’ll have to be quick today as we’re experiencing the shortest days of light in Perth for the year currently.

6:00 PM

Make dinner and listen to my partner’s stories from the day. We finish most nights watching something on the streaming services. Tonight she picked Star Wars which is always fine by me!

9:00 PM

I fall asleep around this time, ready to do it all again tomorrow!
