About this scholarship

This scholarship promotes Indigenous Australian studies by supporting the education of Indigenous Australian people in study relating to the life and works of Oodgeroo Noonuccal.

What you'll receive

There are two scholarships available, which will be paid as one-off payments.

The successful undergraduate student will receive $7,500.

The successful postgraduate student will receive $10,000.


You must:

  • be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
  • have been accepted or enrolled either part-time or full-time in an undergraduate or postgraduate course for Semester 1, 2018 and completed 96 credit points
  • have not received this scholarship before.


Postgraduate scholarship

Conditions for keeping the scholarship for postgraduate students includes:

  • commence studies in semester 1 in which the scholarship has been awarded
  • take no more than one year of approved leave of absence from the course which must have been applied for and approved by the relevant faculty in accordance with QUT Policy and relevant course rules
  • must maintain a grade point average of four. If the student receives a failing grade (K–2) for more than one unit, the scholarship will be rescinded. The number of grades of three allowable is determined by the relevant course rules (postgraduate coursework)
  • maintain active communication with the Oodgeroo Unit, QUT at all times
  • attend the official scholarship presentation ceremony
  • give consent to photographs being taken for the purposes of promotional activities including media, webpage/s by the Oodgeroo Unit.

About the scholarship

In recognition of a lifetime commitment to Indigenous peoples and her outstanding contributions to Australian literature, Oodgeroo Noonuccal was awarded three honorary doctorates by Australian universities.

She received two honorary doctorate awards for her contribution to Australian literature: a Doctorate of Letters from Macquarie University and a Doctor of the University from Griffith University.

In 1992 Oodgeroo received an honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Education Queensland University of Technology for both her contribution to literature and in recognition of her work in the field of education.

This scholarship is an ongoing acknowledgment of these lifetime achievements.
