About this course

The Diploma of Accounting prepares you for a professional Accounting role in the financial services industry.

You will learn how to prepare financial reports, operational budgets, financial statements, and tax documentation for individuals, as well as the expertise to provide financial, business performance, and management accounting information. You will also learn how to manage budgets, make forecasts, and implement and maintain internal control procedures.

This course can be studied on or off-campus and is available as part of the Free TAFE scheme as well as the JobTrainer initiative, for eligible students.

Entry requirements

Completion of the following six units, or their equivalent, which constitute the requirements for the FNSSS00014 Accounting Principles Skill Set:

  • FNSACC311 Process financial transactions and extract interim reports
  • FNSACC312 Administer subsidiary accounts and ledgers
  • FNSACC408 Work effectively in the accounting and bookkeeping industry
  • FNSACC416 Set up and operate a computerised accounting system
  • FNSTPB401 Complete business activity and instalment activity statements
  • FNSTPB402 Establish and maintain payroll systems;

OR

Completion of FNS40615 Certificate IV in Accounting or equivalent;

OR

Completion of FNS40215 Certificate IV in Bookkeeping or equivalent.

Before being accepted into the course you must:

  • Attend an interview
  • Undertake a Pre-training Review to document your previous work experience and qualifications and assess your suitability for the course
  • Complete a CSPA test to ensure you have the required language, literacy and numeracy levels required for the course

The selection criteria for this course are:

  • Ability to undertake training at this qualification level
  • Literacy and numeracy skills of an appropriate level
  • Keen interest in this Industry sector
  • Ability to communicate with others
  • Computer skills in Word, Excel and use of the Internet to a basic level
  • Ability to organise study and work independently.

The Diploma of Accounting gives you the skills to take up a number of roles across the financial services industry.

Working in this industry will give you exposure to a broad range of people and operations. You may be dealing with customers, working with Microsoft Office or specialist software packages, or entering and processing financial information.

Armed with these essential business skills, you'll have the chance to work across different industries and locations.

Credit for prior study or work

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
