Harness your creative talent and perfect your practice with the Certificate IV in Design. Learn core design processes, master typography, and fine-tune your creative thinking skills.

You'll gain advanced skills in digital imaging and producing technical drawings, and create print and web files in various formats.

You'll also learn important techniques for dealing with clients and stakeholders. Learn how to read between the lines when interpreting a design brief to understand what the client really wants, as well as how to successfully collaborate with designers and non-designers alike.

This course is available as part of the JobTrainer initiative for eligible students.

Before being accepted into the course applicants must:

  • Attend an interview
  • Undertake a Pre-training Review to document previous work experience and qualifications and assess suitability for the course
  • Complete a Core Skills Profile for Adults (CSPA) test to ensure the required language, literacy and numeracy levels are met for the course
  • It is a requirement to present examples of at least 8-10 pieces of creative work
  • Basic computer literacy is an advantage

It is preferred that students currently hold the CUA30715 Certificate III in Design fundamentals or have equivalent abilities. These skills may have been acquired through personal or work experience, or through secondary or other formal study.

Career pathways

This course will prepare you to work in the design industry as a qualified Design Assistant or Junior Graphic Design Assistant.

Armed with essential design and creative thinking skills, you'll have the opportunity to further your knowledge and skills to seek employment in the Visual Arts and Craft and Design industry.

Credit for prior study or work

Skills Recognition is an assessment only process that may result in credits towards a part or full qualification. There is no formal training involved, although you may choose to complete further training as a result of the assessment process.

You can apply for Skills Recognition before you enrol in the qualification you are seeking. You can apply for Skills Recognition through one or both of the following processes:

  • Credit Transfer for formal training that might be equivalent to a new qualification or partial qualification
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for people who have relevant and current skills and knowledge that they have gained through non-formal or informal learning i.e. work or life experience.
