About this course

This six week workshop is an introduction to building cane and paper objects, with a particular focus on large scale puppet creation. Students will be guided through the processes of blending sculpture, puppetry and performance to design and make their own objects/puppets using cane and paper building techniques. Topics will include preparing and bending cane, strengthening and shaping, cutting and jointing, forming and building, preparing paper and glue materials, cladding with paper and finishing and decorating cane structures.

Students will experience interactive demonstrations as well as an insight into the history of large scale puppets and puppetry techniques. These puppets, built with the assumption that myth and archetypal imagery are functional operations of human consciousness, and based on the reasonable needs of human beings to share and celebrate humanity, culminate in a blend of visual spectacle, popular theatre, energy and celebration.

Please wear safe, closed-toe footwear (no sandals or high heels). Please bring a notebook, pen, and pencil. All other materials will be provided.
