The WorkCover Queensland story

Workers’ compensation is a form of insurance payment to employees that have been injured at work or become sick due to the nature of their work. Compensation typically includes payments to employees to cover their wages while they are not fit to work, as well as their medical and rehabilitation expenses.

In Australia, each state and territory have their own workers’ compensation legislation and statutory bodies that enforce Occupational Health and Safety laws, run programs to reduce the number of workplace injuries and oversee workers’ compensation schemes. For Queensland, the Workers’ Compensation Regulator is responsible for these tasks and works closely with WorkCover Queensland to support injured workers.

WorkCover is a self-funded, government-owned statutory body that has been providing workers’ compensation insurance to employers for more than 20 years. We aspire to be a customer-focused entity and aim for operational excellence while keeping premium costs low for employers and giving injured workers access to rehabilitation and supporting the best possible return to work path.

There are four main groups within WorkCover: Customer, People and Finance, Digital and Technology, and Strategic Development. Our CEO, Bruce Watson, reports to the Board of Directors, and the Minister for Industrial Relations.

WorkCover is based in Brisbane’s CBD.

The culture

At the centre of WorkCover’s culture is a strong sense of teamwork. Here, it is never about a single person, a single team, or a single project – our people work together to build a better business and continuously improve customer experiences.

WorkCover brings together a diverse range of talent, with a great focus on personal and professional development. There are many opportunities to help achieve your potential, which adds value to the meaningful work done and creates a truly inclusive environment to work in.

WorkCover is committed to gender equity (with 65 percent of the workforce being female), supporting LGBTIQA+ staff, closing the gap in employment outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, supporting staff with disabilities, and recruiting individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse groups.

The health and wellbeing of our people is one of WorkCover’s ongoing corporate goals, with an improved focus on encouraging healthy habits and increasing education amongst the community. Here are a few examples of health and wellbeing programs WorkCover offer:

  • flu vaccinations
  • skin checks
  • corporate private health insurance
  • individual health assessments
  • weekly fruit deliveries.

Our people are important to us and we believe strongly in supporting them as they support others.

Social contribution

While workers’ compensation is given a somewhat facetious reputation by Australians, it plays an important role for both injured workers and business owners who can potentially suffer severe financial and legal consequences if a workplace accident occurs. Through investing in efficient online customer services and claims management capabilities, WorkCover strives to keep premiums affordable for business owners while still excelling operationally.

WorkCover partners with many third-party stakeholders to improve our internal processes and understands the importance of working with the wider community. In 2018, WorkCover staff raised over $25,000 for charities through our ‘Casual for a Cause’ programs.
