My goal today was to build a client Power BI dashboard that aims to highlight training areas that require further coaching and upskilling in their workforce

7.00 AM

I usually start my workday with a warm bowl of oats before heading out the door. Today, I am heading into the Sydney office!

Heading to the office

8.30 AM

I set up my workstation at the hot desk and made myself a cup of tea before going through my emails, checking my calendar and writing down my daily priorities.

8.45 AM

The morning kicked off with a daily team Stand Up with my engagement team. The first agenda item of the meeting is usually a Safety Share where a team member spends a few minutes sharing a health or safety tip to keep in mind. This morning’s Safety Share was about the importance of good office ergonomics and general tips to ensure a good working space at home. Next, each team member gave an update on their weekly “stretched” goal and outlined their actions for the day.

My goal today was to build a client Power BI dashboard that aims to highlight training areas that require further coaching and upskilling in their workforce. I quickly sketched out how I wanted the dashboard to look and what information was necessary to put in each page on paper so I don’t go down the wrong path.

9.30 AM

I caught up with a senior member of the team to get their thoughts on my drafted dashboard and any potential areas for improvement. This is something I try to do whenever building something new, as it’s a great way to get early alignment and more importantly, reduce any future re-work and struggle!

Once coming to agreement on how we want the dashboard to look, I began the process of organising and transforming the data set using PowerQuery.

12.15 PM

Time for lunch – I messaged my some of colleagues to meet up at the office balcony and we enjoyed our lunches in the sun. We talked about how all our projects are going and any exciting trips/events coming up. Then, a few of us headed downstairs to grab a coffee and afternoon treat before heading back to work.

I attended a one-hour virtual training session ran by some of our Senior Associates to upskill my Excel and modelling skills – today’s session, we learned about the different types of models we can use to answer the different questions and pitfalls you can run into when modelling.

2.00 PM

I continued working on my dashboard before reaching out to another team member to discuss my progress and made a few small adjustments to decide the best way to present the data. We agreed that we needed more client feedback before progressing further, so I scheduled a client call for tomorrow morning so we can get their input.

5.00 PM

We had a team Stand Down meeting where each of us provided a summary of our day to the team, including our highs and lows, and any emerging issues we encountered throughout the day. On today’s Stand Down, the engagement manager reminded us that we are travelling to the client’s office (Melbourne) next week and that we needed to book our flights and accommodation ahead of time. We finished off the meeting joking about who’s going to make it to the gym or not – some team rivalry never hurt anybody!

5.15 PM

Before logging off, I did a final check on the dashboard to ensure all changes and feedback from my colleagues earlier today were saved. I also quickly looked for flight and accommodation options for Melbourne next week and settled on a 6am Monday flight and a hotel that is a five-minute walk from our client’s office.

6.30 PM

I packed up my things, left the office, and headed to the gym. I find the gym a great way to get my mind off work, and I always leave feeling good (and sore) for the next day.

8.00 PM

I headed home, took a quick shower and made myself dinner. This was a good time to catch up with my roommates on how their days went. After dinner, I tend to wind down by having a bit of ‘me time’, recharge for the day ahead and go to bed by 11 PM.
