Sam Murari

The last meeting of the day is a catchup with my manager. He is very involved in my development and career, has given me tips and tricks to improve my career, and is an all-around great manager.

Hi everyone, my name is Sam, and I have a Bachelor of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (Hons) from RMIT University. I’m here to take you through the day in the life of an nbn graduate.

8.30 AM

I like to get into the office early and choose my desk for the day. Our team sits in the same place, so it’s easy to find everyone, but I still want to find a desk with a good view. Once I’ve found where to sit, I leave my bag and head over to the kitchen to make some coffee. I cannot function in the mornings without coffee! In the meantime, I say hi to the rest of my team and chat about what we have on for us today.

9.00 AM

Time to start the day!

First things first - I check what my calendar is like today. Thankfully not many meetings. I checked the calendar before bed last night and confirmed the first meeting was at 9.30 am but double-check. Once that’s confirmed, I go through any Microsoft Teams messages and emails which warrant an immediate reply. After checking everything, I have a good idea of what my day looks like and write out my to-do list of things I want to finish today in Miro; it helps me keep on track.

9.30 AM

The day's first meeting is a showcase presentation with a Project sponsor. I go through the work that has been completed, the project's current progression, and the next steps. They’re very happy and have only slight tweaks. Overall, a success! Now to get cracking on the tasks on the to-do list.

10.00 AM

Meet up with some of the grads for a quick chat. We like to have a theme every time we come into the office. Today was Turtleneck Thursday.

11.00 AM

By now, I’ve had around one or two meetings. Between each meeting, I take notes and update the work as I go. A lot of information is said in these meetings, and having a library of information is good. Here’s where my One Note sheet comes in handy; it has all the information from every time and every meeting. It’s a library of information.

12.30 PM

Lunch! My favourite part of the day. Head downstairs to the shops to meet the rest of the grads. Got myself a Quinoa Salad to try and be healthy. Despite being on different teams, we like to meet up at least twice a week to eat lunch together and socialise. It's fun to catch up with the grads. We organise together when the next onsite catchup should be and what we should do after work.

1.00 PM

Every day for at least 30 min I like to take a brief walk outside. Thankfully the weather is beautiful, so I head to the park opposite the office to have a stroll. It's good to take in the fresh air, and it helps keep me refreshed and focused.

1.45 PM

Back from the stroll. I host a meeting with the project team and go through the feedback from the project sponsors from earlier today and delegate tasks across the team, I also organise when next to catch up and review the work completed. This is a weekly meeting and helps keep everything on track.

3.00 PM

The last meeting of the day is a catchup with my manager. He is very involved in my development and career, has given me tips and tricks to improve my career, and is an all-around great manager. We discuss my work, any issues I may be experiencing, and my current capacity and see if any adjustments to my workload need to be made. Thankfully, I feel I’m doing really well and don’t need further changes.

5.00 PM

The day has ended! Today has been very productive, and I’ve been able to tick off several tasks on my list. Time to save everything and head home for a well-deserved break.
