What discipline and cohort (i.e. 2018 or 2019) are you in?
Civil Engineering, 2018
Provide an overview of all your rotations to date:
Castle Hill Station – NRT Infrastructure Joint Venture:
One of the 16 construction sites on the project and Sydney Metros' largest project connecting the North Western suburbs of Sydney that will provide reliable public transport service. The Sydney Metro Northwest is the first fully automated metro rail system in Australia.
Perth Transport Authority Urban Rail Maintenance and Infrastructure:
One of John Holland’s long-standing projects in Australia.
What does your typical workday look like?
The typical day on site will always begin with the morning pre-start and some light stretches to get you awake at 6.00 am. Daily site inspections and safety inspections are crucial in keeping the worksite safe and ensuring quality is consistent.
What has been the most interesting thing about your job?
There aren’t many opportunities to build a train station especially an underground train station in Australia. The rotation in projects allows you to meet new people all the time and being challenged to learn more every day.
What are the limitations of your role?
Not being in attendance at client and designer meetings to get the latest updates can make it difficult at times.
What is something you wish you knew before you started?
As much as you learn in university, you will be surprised by the amount of terminology used to describe objects, tools, techniques, and vehicles. Don’t be afraid to ask for an explanation of the word, because the last thing you want to do is interpret something incorrectly.
How did you prepare for starting on the Graduate Program?
I prepared for the Graduate Program by gathering all my clothes and belongings as I was moving across
state to start a new job.
