Roger Mao

I love the opportunity to learn more everyday in addition to applying my knowledge straight away. The tasks which I enjoy the most usually involve coding or creating a solution.

Where did you grow up?

Grew up in Sydney. Went to Sydney Technical High School and have worked as a private tutor and in retail. Travelled to China and Japan and am planning to visit America after international travel resumes.

How did you get to your current job position?

I applied for the graduate role at DXC Technology and have been working at DXC since April 2021.

How did you choose your specialisation?

Considering my background, I applied for the systems engineering role/stream

What was your interview process like?

The interview process was very efficient with an initial interview, assessment centre and then the final interview. Most questions were behavioural questions but also a few technical questions were asked relating to my role.

What does your employer do?

I work in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Practice at DXC Technology working on customer projects.

What are your areas of responsibility?

My main responsibility is to manage enquiries from customers about AWS, while also working on internal tasks (such as updating code). As a graduate, my responsibilities aren’t as extensive as senior team members but as I learn from them, I am able to pick up more.

Can you describe a typical work day?

As we are working from home, I get to sleep in and usually start at 9am. After a daily stand-up with the team to discuss my projects, I work on my assigned tasks and monitor any new customer requests. The last project I worked on included creating a new monitoring solution on AWS for a customer.

What are the career prospects with your job?

AWS skills are in high demand in the market so there is the opportunity for great career progression. Additionally, as you do your AWS certifications it further enhances your career prospects.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Definitely. I knew next to nothing about AWS when I started.

What would your career be if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

I would probably be working for a more traditional engineering company doing systems engineering on non-IT systems (such as mechanical).

What do you love the most about your job?

I love the opportunity to learn more everyday in addition to applying my knowledge straight away. The tasks which I enjoy the most usually involve coding or creating a solution.

What’s the biggest limitation of your job?

One of the biggest challenges of the job is waiting for approval. Sometimes it can take a while as team members are usually very busy. Very rarely is weekend work required and stress (to me) is very manageable.

A word to the wise...

  • Which three pieces of advice would you give to a current university student? They don’t necessarily have to be related to your role, or even be career-focused.
  • Learn everyday, do what you enjoy and take a break when needed.
