Fim Buathong

Being in the graduate program gives me the opportunity to tackle real world problems with the latest technology. The environment is relaxed, supportive, and I never feel out of place.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Darwin, Northern Territory for most of my life and the biggest phase was moving out of my hometown for university and work.

How did you get to your current job position?

I obtained my current job by applying online via the DXC Technology website and have been working for DXC for about five months.

How did you choose your specialisation?

I worked at an IT consulting firm during my year-long industry-based learning (IBL) and felt technical consulting was calling my name.

What was your interview process like? It was a simple process where the interviewer asked what I wanted to do and how my goals aligned with DXC’s graduate development program.

What does your employer do?

DXC Technology is one of the largest B2B IT services companies providing a wide range of IT solutions and services.

What are your areas of responsibility?

My main responsibility is to support more experienced consultants with project work.

Can you describe a typical work day?

A typical work day is different to your usual 9 to 5 - it is fun! The last thing I worked on was building an internal cloud skills assessment survey for DXC Cloud.

What are the career prospects with your job?

I feel a lot of technical concepts can be carried over from one area to another, I ventured into cloud but honestly, the possibilities are endless.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Definitely. The hardest part would be learning the technical details but if you enjoy teamwork and have good communication skills, you are already 80% there!

What would your career be if you weren’t doing what you’re doing now?

Probably a pilot!

What do you love the most about your job?

I love the amount of depth I can get into.  There are lots to learn so it keeps me moving forward. I enjoy being involved in creative projects where I can think outside the box and innovate.

What’s the biggest limitation of your job?

At this point, there are no limitations at all. It is a very supportive environment.

A word to the wise...

  • Set time aside to do things you really enjoy even it is considered “unproductive” - it helps you mentally and can have a positive effect on university/work.
  • Find your area of interest, focus on it and master it. Bruce Lee once said he does not fear someone who has practiced 10,000 kicks once but someone who has practiced one kick 10,000 times!
