Charlotte Birch

The DXC graduate program has allowed me to gain valuable experience in a supportive environment, where I’m never afraid to ask questions. Real responsibility from day one – the program provides a good mix of both on the job learning and formal training. No two days are ever the same!

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the Gold Coast, before moving to Brisbane to attend the University of Queensland, where I studied a Bachelor of Commerce and Business Management. Throughout my studies I completed a semester abroad at the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom.

How did you get to your current job position?

I have been in my role for six months now. I started as a graduate in the 2021 intake.

How did you choose your specialisation?

The interview process was well structured and included aptitude testing, one on one interviews and an assessment centre where I worked within a team to problem solve. The assessment centre was a lot of fun, as I was able to meet other students and participate in an activity that provided insight into what it is like working within a team at DXC. During the one on one interviews, I was able to ask questions regarding what my typical day might look like if I were to get the job. This made me feel confident about applying to a company that I could see myself with long term.

What does your employer do?

DXC Technology is an IT services company that provides technical solutions for a large number of companies in a range of different industries.

What are your areas of responsibility?

The responsibilities of a project management graduate can include project management office functions, project control functions and overall project management. This involves learning skills in stakeholder engagement, scheduling, financial management, reporting, project governance and more.

Can you describe a typical work day?

A typical work day includes engaging with project stakeholders and assisting with project governance, attending internal and client facing meetings with project managers and technical resources, onboarding and offboarding new team members, resource utilisation tracking, and much more! No two days are ever the same.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes – with the right motivation and willingness to learn, I believe that people with different backgrounds can perform this job. The ability to adapt to changes, problem solve and communicate well within a team are all qualities that make an effective project manager.

What do you love the most about your job?

What I love most about my job is being able to interact with different people within the company to gain a range of perspectives and insights. I have been able to observe and learn about different management styles and approaches to get things done.

What’s the biggest limitation of your job?

A lot of responsibility from day one! Although intimidating at first – being thrown into the deep end has allowed me to learn quickly and gain experience in a range of areas.

A word to the wise...

  • Get involved – I would suggest making the most of any opportunities that are thrown your way.
  • Always make time for what you are truly passionate about.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak up – unique perspectives are always appreciated.
