What's your job about?

Diageo’s ambition is to be one of the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer products companies in the world. I am an Assistant Brand Manager for the Bundaberg Rum, Captain Morgan, UDL and Ruski Marketing team. Some of the major projects I work on a daily base include the development of marketing plans for our brands and our new products (such as new advertisements on TV, Out Of Home campaigns, Radio and Digital Assets). Another significant project I work on is the development of new packaging for all products within our range – this is to ensure consumers are able to easily find our products in-store and they are modern and enticing for consumers to purchase. Furthermore, I work on developing sponsorship assets for a major partnership with the NRL (the highest viewed sporting code in Australia) and planning the brand’s longer term marketing and innovation activities moving into 2019 and beyond.  

 What's your background?

I grew up in Sydney, attending school in North Sydney and attending the University of Sydney, completing a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in Marketing & International Business). Whilst studying at university I worked for a Marketing Analytics firm, Ebiquity, working as an advertising analyst which gave me a great understanding on advertising intelligence and media performance. I also worked at Reckitt Benckiser which was a solid introduction to the world of FMCG, working in the brand marketing team. I am now working on the Global Graduate Program at Diageo, where my first rotation has been in the Rum & Local Priority Brand team working on the incredible brands of Bundaberg Rum, Captain Morgan, UDL and Ruski where I have been working for 18 months.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes definitely – I believe individuals with a different background could definitely work in this job. Individuals that are motivated, work collaboratively, are inclusive and enjoy a challenge will perform extremely well and would be able to accomplish all tasks within this job. Overall, Diageo is a vibrant, progressive and rewarding company to work for, with a diverse range of employees of all different backgrounds.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Diageo provides the fantastic opportunity to work on significant projects as part of the Global Graduate Program. These projects are challenging and rewarding, with strong confidence and support from the business. I’ve loved working on some fantastic consumer-facing projects, such as Bundaberg Rum’s new advertising campaign ‘Unmistakably Ours’ or working on the brand’s packaging change – renovating over 50 different products into new, modern and distinctive packaging. The company has a fantastic culture, with some great charity opportunities which I’ve been able to take advantage of, as well as extra-curricular activities such as touch rugby and netball.

What are the limitations of your job?

I bear a lot of responsibility– as part of the Diageo Graduate Program, your projects and daily-tasks bear a challenging and rewarding level of responsibility. Work hours are usually 8/8:30-5:30pm however weekend work isn’t required on a regular basis.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Be comfortable with being uncomfortable – you are always going to be pushed into areas where you are not used to, and you will need to flex and adapt to the situation as best as you can.
  • Ensure that you give your financial life a similar focus to that of your work life or social life – have some goals in place.
  • Don’t be afraid to fail – strive to continuously learn and don’t be afraid to mistakes because everyone makes them in life.
