Career Prospects at BHP

7.8 rating for Career Prospects, based on 14 reviews
Please tell us about promotion possibilities and fill us in on what it takes to move up the ranks.
I think the possibilities are definitely there, but there is a lot of people who want to move up too, so there is strong competition.
Graduate, Port Headland
Many of the previous years grads are in superintendent/senior/management positions at a young age which shows the companies attitude towards the promotion possibilities. To get promoted would take the same as at most companies, ability and turnover. I am bullish on the promotion opportunities.
Graduate, Perth / Port Hedland
With the addition of secondments, you seem to be able to gain experience in any facet of the business, and as far as I can tell, experience (and a good attitude) is the only thing that you require to move anywhere. BHP seem to go to great lengths to retain their people.
Graduate, Newman
I feel the company as a whole provides excellent opportunity for development and career progression. However, as a grad in my department (Geoscience) I feel that they are holding us back from progressing through the ranks as early as we would like ourselves.
Graduate, Mine Site (Mackay/Moranbah)
It is essential to be good at working with people within this company. From senior upwards, a large portion of your job is dealing with people rather than technical work.
Graduate, Roxby Downs
Somewhat satisfied. It will look good being at BHP but because we do very little real engineering I am worried about being able to move companies later on.
Graduate, Moranbah/ Dysart (site based at Peak Downs Mine)
Strong career progression opportunities. Multiple examples of former graduates sitting in a huge variety of roles at all levels of the business.
Graduate, Roxby Downs
Opportunities to move up in this team are somewhat guaranteed if you perform to a high standard, but only if people who are currently in the positions move on. If all the roles are filled, an office-only job will probably be offered, which will not utilise a lot of the skills learned on site.
Graduate, Roxby Downs
Is not personally on my radar as yet, but from observing others it seems there is good opportunity.
Graduate, Moranbah
Awesome visibility, so many opportunities to try new roles etc!
Graduate, Moranbah
Looks to be opportunity for younger people to take responsibility early.
